Project 3: Finding Art

  • Formal Qualities – the “form” of the object: small or large, brightly colored or monochrome, smooth or highly textured, simple and minimal or dense and complex, and so on. Think about Line, Color, Shape, Rhythm, Cadence, Scale, and so on
    • Our piece of art is medium in size, brightly colored, with high texture/density. THere is more to our photo than just a small pink flower. The brown wood chips on the ground brings our view texture.
  • Aesthetics – from your Formal Qualities, you can segue into a discussion of your art’s Aesthetic properties, how it looks and feels. Is it pleasant? Disturbing? How does it affect the viewer?
    • This makes me feel sad because in the view there are only 3 flowers on top of what looks like brown rubble. However, the pink flower is unique and stands out in front of its peers of green bush leaves.
  • Content – finally discuss the ideas found in your art. What does it say? What does it mean? Why is it important?
    • Although outnumbered by the green bush leaves, the flowers have a strong bond. They may not have strength in numbers but strength in beauty and talent.
    • The brown wood chips provide nutrients to both the bush and the pink flowers. While men and women both have different qualities, we are still very similar and have some similar needs like the flower and bush both need soil, water, co2.
  1. Was your Art, Art before you put a rectangle around it? Why or why not?
    1. My art was not art prior to the rectangle because pf the fact that it is just a bush with flowers that students pass by on their way inside the USU building. The rectangle we made provides a focus on our piece of art.
  2. Will your Art be Art after the rectangle is gone? Why or why not?
    1. Now that the rectangle is gone and without my explanation of what the view meant, it is not considered art anymore.
  3. Does art reside in the body of the object? So that some objects are art and some objects are not art? Explain. How do we know which objects are art and which are not?
    1. I think art resides in more than just the body of the object. But collectively a collection of objects could be art. There should be meaning to the objects collectively.
  4. Can art be something other than an object?
    1. Art could be in the form of an action, like dancing, or singing. Its an expression that can be represented in many forms.
  5. Does art reside in the experience of the viewer? So that it isn’t an object per se, but a way and a choice of taking the time to have a viewing experience? Explain.
    1. The experience of the viewer is part of the art work. I think taking the time to experience art can be life changing and it does require some effort. I think the experience is a big part of art.
